Organizations are spending more on cybersecurity than ever – yet data continues to slip out. Despite massive investments in protection, 77% experienced at least one insider data loss event over the past 18 months. Nearly half of these cases stemmed from simple human error – someone sent a file to the wrong recipient, copied the wrong row, or accidentally shared a document. Small mistakes, huge consequences.

The 2025 Fortinet-Cybersecurity Insiders report reveals a troubling trend: the risk isn’t just from sophisticated threats anymore – it’s the vast gap between perceived control and real-world outcomes.

Seventy-two percent of organizations increased their data protection budgets last year, adding dedicated insider risk programs. Yet 41% still faced multi-million-dollar losses per event, and 9% saw damages hit $10 million for a single incident. It’s not a matter of inaction – these companies deploy DLP solutions, monitor systems, and write procedures – but outdated tools blind them to what’s really happening. Seventy-two percent admitted they lack true visibility into how employees handle sensitive data.

Cloud adoption worsens the problem. Traditional DLPs were designed for regulatory data on-premises – social security numbers, credit cards. They don’t handle design documents, client tables, AI-assisted datasets, or files shared across SaaS tools and CRMs. Without context, alerts flood teams while insights remain elusive, creating a false sense of control.

Time compounds the risk. Three out of four organizations said it takes weeks or months for deployed systems to produce actionable insights – by then, data may be gone. Beyond financial loss, 43% reported reputational damage, 39% operational disruption, and in sectors like biotech, losing a single file can erase years of investment.

Security experts now look for context, not just more tools. They prioritize solutions that understand behavior, detect anomalies, and correlate events into a complete risk picture. The question isn’t “what was sent?” but “should it have been sent?”
