In a chilling demonstration of AI’s potential for misuse, fraudsters recently orchestrated a sophisticated scam targeting some of Italy’s most prominent business figures. By leveraging advanced voice cloning technology, they impersonated Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, convincing at least one victim to transfer nearly €1 million under the guise of a government-sanctioned operation.

The scam unfolded with calls that appeared to originate from official government numbers, adding a layer of credibility. Victims were told that funds were urgently needed to secure the release of kidnapped Italian journalists in the Middle East. The AI-generated voice of Minister Crosetto was so convincing that former Inter Milan owner Massimo Moratti transferred two payments totaling almost €1 million to a Hong Kong bank account, believing he would be reimbursed by the Bank of Italy. Fortunately, Italian authorities managed to trace and freeze the funds in a Dutch account.

This incident underscores the escalating threat of AI-driven fraud. The ability to clone voices with high accuracy means that traditional verification methods, like recognizing a familiar voice, are no longer reliable. Businesses must adapt by implementing multi-factor authentication protocols and educating employees about the risks of social engineering attacks
